Farm and Faith: Food for Life (November 5, 12)
February 16 @ 9:59 am
In 1870, 50 percent of the U.S. population was employed in agriculture, and today the figure is less than 2 percent. For those of us who live in the city, the productive land is out of mind and out of touch; at most, we take drives in the countryside and enjoy the colors and quaint antiques. Many Christians are returning with something else in mind; they are cultivating faith along with crops. They are not idealizing the hard work but find the life to be conducive to spiritual practice and experience. In four sessions we sample from this movement and learn about its many aims and discoveries. Princeton seminarians who undergo formation in their new Farminary program describe what many in this movement are seeking: “… a place where love grows: love of God, love of the land, love of Scripture, love of each other. Part of what we’re hoping for here is an understanding of health and wholeness and vitality that is informed by an ecological sensibility.”
November 5: Rev. Alan Jenkins, Parish Associate, Oakhurst Presbyterian Church, Decatur, GA.
Rev. Jenkins was the first person in PCUSA to be ordained specifically for a ministry of creation care and eco-justice (2007). He will tell us about his work at Academy Mill Farm in Rutledge, GA. He writes that “Humans may very well not survive to the end of the century, but in faithfulness to the Creator, between fasting and serving the Garden, hope is alive.”
November 12: Living between ‘the beginning’ and ‘the Lord’s day’ visions: attempting radical renewal at Plainsong Farm & Ministry.
Plainsong Farm and Ministry is a living laboratory for farm based environmental education and Christian discipleship. Plainsong’s mission is to cultivate connections between people, places, and God as a place that nurtures belonging and the radical renewal of God’s world. Emily Ulmer will share stories of Plainsong’s experiments in belonging and renewal.
Emily Ulmer (she/her), is the Faith Based Programs Director at Plainsong Farm. Any given day can find her crafting prayer walks on the farm, washing dishes for Sabbath at the Farm, Plainsong’s worship gatherings, or talking about place and faith with a participant in Plainsong’s young adult programming. Emily’s work at Plainsong weaves together her experience as a worship planner, her passion for young adult discipleship, her commitment to environmental justice, and her background in grassroots community development. She is an avid baker, canner, podcast listener, and caretaker of indoor plants.
