SUMMARY:America’s God and America’s Game: Home\, Hope and the Gospel According to Baseball
DESCRIPTION:Since its emergence in the nineteenth century\, baseball has grown alongside the American nation itself. More than simply “America’s pastime\,” it has shaped—and been shaped by—the nation’s history\, values\, and identity. Through clips from Ken Burns’ acclaimed documentary Baseball\, memorable scenes from Field of Dreams\, and selections from literature and history\, we’ll explore how baseball became America’s civil religion\, expressing our deepest longings for home\, community\, sacrifice\, reconciliation\, and redemption. Finally\, we’ll consider how these themes point beyond the ballpark to the larger story told by the Christian gospel. \nOur speaker\, Rev. Quinn Fox\, recently retired from over 40 years of ordained ministry in the PCUSA. He has served Whitworth University as a college chaplain\, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary as Director of Vocation and Admissions\, The Office of Theology and Worship of the Presbyterian Mission Agency as an Associate for Theology\, and two large PCUSA congregations as Associate Pastor for Discipleship and Education: First Presbyterian Church of Colorado Springs and\, for the past 14 ½ years\, The National Presbyterian Church in Washington\, DC. \nQuinn has degrees from Colorado College (B.A.)\, Fuller Theological Seminary (M.Div.\, M.A.) and Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.M.). And he earned a Ph.D. in The History of Christian Thought at Vanderbilt University. Quinn has taught as an adjunct professor for Fuller Theological Seminary\, The Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo\, Egypt\, and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary.  \nJoin us in Heritage Hall\, the lowest level of Elliot House each Sunday for our Adult Forum. \n

SUMMARY:J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis: “Seeing the Gospel Through Narnia and Middle-earth: How Christian Imagination Deepens Faith”
DESCRIPTION:The Christian faith is more than a set of doctrines to believe—it is a reality to be lived and a story to be entered. C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien understood that imagination is one of God’s gifts for helping us perceive the truth\, beauty\, and goodness of the gospel. Through Narnia and Middle-earth\, they invite us to encounter themes of redemption\, providence\, courage\, hope\, and faithfulness in ways that engage both heart and mind. \nIn this two-week class\, we will explore how Lewis and Tolkien understood the relationship between imagination and truth\, why they believed stories can shape faith in profound ways\, and what their writings continue to teach Christians about following Christ in the modern world. Prior familiarity with either author is helpful; longtime readers will discover new depths in these enduring classics. \nSpeaker: Rev. Dr. Quinn Fox \nJoin us in Heritage Hall\, the lowest level of Elliot House each Sunday for our Adult Forum.

SUMMARY:J. R.

SUMMARY:What is God calling the Church to be in the Contemporary World?
DESCRIPTION:Spiritual Discernment for the Meeting House: What is God calling the Church to be in the Contemporary World?\nSpeakers: Strategic Planning Team \nWhat is the Holy Spirit calling the church to be in the world? Throughout the church’s history\, Christians have worked to answer that question\, discerning how best to live Christian values in a way that addresses the unique circumstances in which they live. Earlier Meeting House generations have gone through this discernment process\, in periods ranging from our national founding to the pre-Civil War era and the Civil Rights Movement. \nAt the beginning of this year\, under the leadership of the Session\, our congregation began a period of spiritual discernment. Over the past eight months\, our strategic planning team has engaged the congregation actively through a series of individual and group discussions aimed at answering the question of whom we are called to be as Christians in this time. \nDuring this adult forum class\, we are excited to share the main themes and highlights from engagements with our congregation since January\, including mission and vision statements—drawn directly from congregational input—that the Session has approved on the congregation’s behalf. We are blessed with a caring\, thoughtful\, and engaged congregation—one that has articulated a vision that is exciting\, ambitious\, and clear-eyed about the vital role the church is called to play in the time and place in which we live. \nJoin us in Heritage Hall\, the lowest level of Elliot House each Sunday for our Adult Forum.
