SUMMARY:Welcoming the Stranger – Christ Church Refugee Ministry a Conversation with Melanie Gray
DESCRIPTION:Welcoming the Stranger – The Christ Church Refugee Ministry celebrates its 10-year anniversary \nA brief look at the conscious discernment and inception of this ministry that began in 2015 and where we are today 10 years after working with our first families\, we have now worked with 121 families. Our goal has been to help families living in Alexandria make this their home and we help them reach self-sufficiency. Most of the people we work with today are from Afghanistan and Pakistan who are now here in Alexandria trying to make a life for themselves. Times are very difficult with immigration status being uncertain\, resettlement supports unstable and opinions about immigrants vary widely. Our ministry is ecumenical and is made up of 6 active faith communities\, and 14 faith communities that partner with us in different ways. Our model is based on healthy strength-based relationships\, which is the key to our success. \nSpeaker: Melanie Gray\, MSW\, Director of Outreach and Mission\, Historic Christ Church\,  oversees 13 outreach ministries in the City of Alexandria and currently one overseas mission partnership with an HIV/AIDS Clinic in Kampala Uganda. They have just under 200 parishioners involved with outreach and mission and we have partnerships with a variety of faith communities\, nonprofits\, and city government.  Melanie has been a social worker for 32 years and worked in the church for 14 years.

SUMMARY:Choosing the Right Words for The Word: Lessons in Translation
DESCRIPTION:More than 2\,000 years have passed since the biblical books were first composed and compiled. During that time\, the Bible has been translated and disseminated throughout the world—new places\, new contexts\, new languages. Translation is not merely about substitution\, or replacing one word with another in a new language\, it is about communicating an idea to a new time\, place\, and culture. According to Dutch theologian Sijbolt Noorda\, “Translation doesn’t take place in vacuo\, but in a specific cultural environment. This is precisely why translation must be done again and again.” In this forum\, we will explore the main components of translation and highlight some important places in the Gospel of Matthew where translation really matters! \nRev. Dr. Megan Fullerton Strollo is Assistant Professor of Biblical Languages at Union Presbyterian Seminary. There\, she teaches courses in Hebrew\, Greek\, and Aramaic as well as courses in biblical interpretation and translation. Her research interests focus on post-exilic literature of the Bible\, including the books of Ruth\, Song of Songs\, Ecclesiastes\, Lamentations\, and Esther. When it comes to both interpretation and translation\, she always says\, “Context matters!”

SUMMARY:Sacraments Class: Communion
DESCRIPTION:Churches of the Reformed tradition celebrate two Sacraments: Baptism and Communion (also known as the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist). We affirm these two Sacraments to be ordained by God and instituted by the Lord Jesus Christ (see Matthew 28:19–20 and Matthew 26:26–29). In Baptism we are united to Christ as members of his body\, the church; at Communion we join with the church in every time and place to give thanks for our salvation in Christ. In Baptism we are washed and welcomed by the grace of God; at Communion we are nourished and strengthened by that same grace.    Our hope is that through this class disciples have a deeper\, more personal appreciation and understanding of the Sacraments in our Reformed faith tradition. \nSpeaker:  Rev. SUMMARY:Jesus and Poverty: A Look at Some Difficult Texts
DESCRIPTION:When we want to think about Jesus and some ethical issue (like wealth and poverty) we do well to remember to look at both the biblical texts that shaped Jesus (which you have been doing for the last several weeks) and also the biblical texts about Jesus (the early Christian writings of the New Testament). The Gospels (written about 40-70 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus) are theological portraits of him with interesting minor differences in emphasis. But one place where they are very close is on questions about wealth and poverty. Both the stories about what Jesus said and did and the stories that Jesus himself told are important sources for us. This presentation will focus briefly on some of the scriptures of Israel that Jesus knew before turning to the traditions about Jesus on the subjects of wealth and poverty. A particular focus will be on interpretations of scripture and arguments that have been used to escape the biblical commandments to care for those in need. \nSpeaker: The Rev. Dr. Katherine Grieb\, Director of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies and the Meade Professor of Biblical Interpretation and New Testament at Virginia Theological Seminary

SUMMARY:Lenten Series: Welcoming the People of God\, Part 5
DESCRIPTION:Women comprise half of God’s people\, but their stories are fewer in the biblical narrative. Women’s ever-evolving roles in the leadership include ordination as elders in 1930 and as pastors in 1965. The Meeting House called our first female Pastor/Head of Staff in 2024. How do we continue the mindful work of welcome\, diversity\, and inclusion going forward\, even when we think we may be “done”? In this final class we will engage in practical brainstorming\, asking What’s Next? \nSpeakers: Rev. Katherine Stanford\, Linda Lanam\, and Jennifer Veech

SUMMARY:Mt. Vernon Cares
DESCRIPTION:Mt Vernon Cares started as a group of MVHS special education teachers that saw a need for bringing their community together in support of their students and their families. Their primary vehicle for reimagining the way our community interacts with their most vulnerable population became the Gobblepalooza 5k Turkey Trot. Despite the pandemic and school closures\, they celebrated their 16th consecutive event by adding a 10k. Their fundraising efforts support their music therapy programming\, various student run organizations and sports\, scholarships and have even been used in aiding international disaster relief campaigns. In conjunction with the gracious local businesses and neighbors that allow their roads to be closed the Saturday before Thanksgiving\, MVHS has celebrated this long-standing “trot-ition” while thinking globally and acting locally.

SUMMARY:A Dickens Christmas: Hearing the Gospel through Charles Dickens’s "A Christmas Carol"
DESCRIPTION:Each year at Advent\, Christians everywhere revisit a certain old Victorian moral story. The images of snow-covered English cobblestone streets\, the sentimentally-portrayed ragged poor\, and the ever-more familiar plot line don’t seem to grow tiresome through the years. Charles Dickens’s preachy little tale A Christmas Carol holds us captive like the returning relative we have come to expect—even yearn—to see every holiday season. \nDuring this season of Advent during our Sunday morning Adult Education hour\, we will look at the Advent lessons through Ebenezer Scrooge’s eyes. We will learn the traditional Advent lessons of Hope\, Faith\, Peace\, and Joy\, and we will also observe how Dickens shows us how Scrooge needs the lessons of Advent in his life. For Christians\, when Christ comes into our lives and is born in our hearts\, He becomes the Lord of our past\, present\, and future. Keeping this thought in mind\, Charles Dickens’ spirits of Christmas past\, Christmas present\, and Christmas future take on a new meaning in our lives. \nSuggested reading for this study: The Redemption of Scrooge by Matt Rawle. \nFacilitated by Linda Lanam\, Priscilla Andre-Colton\, and Rev. Dr. Shelly Wood
