AlexRenew: Treating wastewater to protect public health and our waterways.
Facilitator: Jim Beall
AlexRenew is the wastewater treatment authority for Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. Each year, their team treats approximately 13 billion gallons of wastewater it receives from area homes, schools, and businesses, before safely returning it to our waterways. This presentation will provide:
- Introduction to AlexRenew.
- A review of Alex Renew’s Lifeline Emergency Assistance Program (LEAP) for customers who are unable to pay their wastewater bill.
- An overview of the River Renew project, which will capture and convey millions of gallons of combined sewage and storm water overflows that would otherwise pollute the Potomac River. The project includes a 2.2-mile-long tunnel along the Alexandria Waterfront and a sewer interceptor along Hooffs Run. The project also restored native habitats on Hooffs Run, adjacent to the Presbyterian Cemetery.
- AlexRenew’s response to the issue of PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in our environment.
